Riding Rio's Sugarloaf cable car in November 2026
Rio De Janeiro, Brasil

Cars leave the Praia Vermelha station every 20 minutes, or as soon as 65 passengers are aboard. Two rides of four minutes each lift you to Morro da Urca at 220m and then to the top of Pão de Açúcar at 396m. Allow a minimum of two hours on the mountain.

The two legs up to the summit

Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar (Praia Vermelha, Urca) runs bubble-shaped glass cabins, painted red and white, hung from a steel cable strung between two granite domes over Guanabara Bay. All 65 passengers stand, which puts everyone at a window. The first leg crosses to the Morro da Urca plateau, the second to the dome itself.

Standard entry is R$185 and covers both legs and both stations. Half-price entry is R$92, and a Fast Pass costs R$295. A bilingual guided tour of 50 minutes seats up to 20 people.

The park admits visitors all day, and the coach parties funnel through the Praia Vermelha station.

Morro da Urca, the station most people ride past

Morro da Urca (first station, Urca) is a flat green plateau paved into a terrace, with shops, kiosks and an open-air amphitheatre. The original 1912 and 1972 cable cars stand beside the amphitheatre as exhibits, and Copacabana curves away behind them.

Most visitors treat the station as a transfer and rejoin the queue for the second leg. The Cocuruto historical machinery display and the Cable Car Square exhibits are both here, as is the Guanabara Bay terrace, and the cable car ticket covers all of them. The plateau is less crowded than the summit.

Bosque das Artes on the summit

Bosque das Artes (Sugarloaf summit) opened in the mountain's socio-environmental preservation zone, with Carlos Vergara's Projeto Maravilha showing from 31 October and an Anna Bella Geiger sculpture added since. Large-format contemporary works stand in a clearing of Atlantic forest, with bare granite and native trees behind them and the bay below.

The trail is open to roam and needs no booking, and the cable car ticket covers it. Walk past the first viewpoint at the top station and keep going.

Tickets and queues

The operator's advice is to book online and arrive early. Weekends and holidays queue badly, so a weekday ride in November is the easier one to plan. A cabin leaves when it fills, and the line at Praia Vermelha moves in batches.

Guided full-day tours that take in the cable car run every day of the week, in a season running from 14 October 2026 to 31 July 2027. Some departures of the most-booked tour are already sold out on 24, 25 and 31 December 2026 and on 1 January 2027. Other dates are still bookable.

Best time to go in November 2026

Aim for a late-afternoon ride, and break the trip on the first plateau. Clássico Beach Club Urca (Morro da Urca) is an open-air timber deck of lounge chairs and low tables, with caipirinhas on the tables and Copacabana and Corcovado framed straight ahead at golden hour. It opens daily 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., reserves tables and is reachable only by cable car. The band is R$$$.

The other hour worth booking is 5 a.m., when the park's Amanhecer no Parque Bondinho experience serves breakfast at the beach club. The club also holds the Saturday sunrise sitting.

Breakfast and lunch on the mountain

Embaixada Carioca (Urca Hill) is the one proper sit-down meal above the station, a glass-fronted dining room where feijoada arrives in black clay pots and picanha comes to the table on the board, with the bay and the granite dome through the windows. It opens at 8:45 a.m., and at 7:45 a.m. at weekends. Ride early and eat afterwards.

Plates run R$44 to R$190. Reserve by WhatsApp or through Tagme, and book ahead for weekend feijoada. Everything else on the mountain is quick bites.

Noites de Verão opens 28 November

Palco Morro da Urca (Morro da Urca) opens the Noites de Verão season on 28 November with Biquini Cavadão and Leo Jaime, and the run continues through January. The stage is floodlit and outdoors, with the crowd silhouetted against the lit dome and the city lights across the bay.

A concert ticket includes the cable car up. Single dates sell out, and the 4 December date has gone. The band is R$$$.

Flying from the Morro da Urca helipad

Helisight (Morro da Urca) keeps its own helipad cut into the plateau, and a flight lifts off the cliff edge above Praia Vermelha. It is the only way to see Sugarloaf from the outside.

Flights run on a minimum of three or four passengers, and a party of that size is the cheapest way to fly. Fares are R$640 to R$3,710 per person, and a doors-off flight is R$1,370. You still need a cable car ticket to reach the pad.

Walking up and climbing the rock

Pista Cláudio Coutinho (Urca) is a 1.25km paved seafront path with painted guardrails, Atlantic swell breaking on black boulders on one side and a forest wall full of marmosets on the other. It is free, unticketed and open daily 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bikes, skateboards and rollerblades are banned. Walk it in the hour before the station opens.

Trilha do Morro da Urca (off the Pista Cláudio Coutinho) is the budget route up. It climbs 40 minutes to the first station on a signed path of wooden decks and walkways cut into the hillside, with handrail sections across bare granite slab and a signposted viewpoint where the bay opens up. No ticket or guide is required, and you then pay only for the Urca to Sugarloaf leg. The path is single file. Skip it after rain; the granite gets slippery.

Rio Mountain Sports guides the walk-up trail and the classic multi-pitch Coringa route on the dome itself, roped climbing on the sunlit granite face with the rope running to bolted anchors and Botafogo bay far below. Bookings are private and paced to your level, small parties only. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Sunday, and the price is on enquiry (R$$$).

Urca at sea level

Praia Vermelha (Urca) is a cove of coarse reddish sand wedged between two forested hills, two minutes from the ticket office, with the granite dome rising directly behind the sand. It gives the best ground-level photograph of the mountain. The water is flat and sheltered, and Guanabara Bay water quality often makes swimming a bad idea. The beach is small and fills quickly.

Mureta da Urca, Rio De Janeiro
Mureta da Urca, Rio De Janeiro

Mureta da Urca (Urca) is a low stone seawall along a quiet bayside street, and people sit on it with plastic cups of beer and paper-wrapped pastéis, looking across the water at the mountain and the cable car wires. The wall fills from late afternoon and has no door policy. A seat costs the price of a beer (R$). The city lists the spot as historic, cultural and tourist heritage.

Bar Urca (Urca, across from the seawall) has traded since 1939 and drives the whole seawall ritual, a corner botequim with a tiled floor and a tiny counter stacked with trays of shrimp pastéis and bolinhos de bacalhau. Buy the pastel de camarão at the counter and eat it on the wall opposite. The bar opens at 9 a.m. and the restaurant at 11 a.m. The upstairs dining room does the shrimp bobó if you want a table (R$R$).

Restaurante e Bar Garota da Urca (Urca) has traded since 1982 and is priced for locals, a big open-fronted corner room with white-tiled walls and wooden tables, grilled picanha and cold chopp, and Christ the Redeemer visible up the street. Portions are generous. It opens daily 11:30 a.m. to midnight (R$R$).

Restaurante Terra Brasilis (inside the Círculo Militar da Praia Vermelha) is a veranda of tall windows in a cream-coloured military club building, with white tablecloths and Praia Vermelha and the cable car wires filling the frame. The club itself is members-only, and the restaurant is open to the public. It opens noon to 11 p.m. daily, with live MPB from Wednesday to Saturday. Reservations and events are taken, and the building has no parking (R$R$R$).

Photographing the mountain from Botafogo

Mirante do Pasmado (Botafogo) is a revitalised hilltop terrace with benches set on paths through low vegetation and the large Não Matarás monument above them, Sugarloaf and Botafogo's boat-filled cove straight ahead. It is the best free vantage point for the mountain whole, and the short detour is worth making. Entry is free, and so is the small car park.

The Holocaust Memorial in the same park reopened this year. It opens Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 5 p.m., free.

Who the ride suits

The cable car suits a visitor with a spare half-day and a ticket bought in advance. You need a tolerance for standing in a full cabin and for the weekend line at the lower station.

Readers who want the granite itself have the walk-up trail and the Coringa route.

Before you go

Book the cable car online and come early, and reserve ahead for weekend feijoada and for concert dates. Skip the walk-up trail after rain.

Antes de ir

How much does the Sugarloaf cable car cost in November 2026?

Standard entry to Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar is R$185, half price is R$92 and a Fast Pass is R$295. One ticket covers both stations and both four-minute legs, including the Morro da Urca exhibits and the Bosque das Artes trail at the summit.

How long should I allow for the ride?

Two hours on the mountain is the minimum. Cars leave the Praia Vermelha station every 20 minutes, or as soon as 65 passengers are aboard, and each leg takes four minutes.

Do I need to book ahead, or can I just turn up?

The operator advises booking online and arriving early, since weekends and holidays queue badly. Guided full-day tours that include the cable car run seven days a week through a season that opens 14 October 2026 and closes 31 July 2027. The busiest of those tours has already sold out some departures on 24, 25 and 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027; other dates are still open.

Can I walk up instead of paying for both legs?

Yes. Trilha do Morro da Urca leaves the Pista Cláudio Coutinho and climbs for 40 minutes to the first station. The path is signed and has wooden decks and handrail sections, and it needs no ticket or guide, so you pay only for the Urca to Sugarloaf leg. Avoid it after rain, when the granite turns slippery.

What is the best time of day to go up?

Late afternoon, for golden hour at Clássico Beach Club Urca on the Morro da Urca plateau, which opens daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and can only be reached by cable car. The alternative is 5 a.m., when the park's Amanhecer no Parque Bondinho experience serves breakfast up there.
